Kumbh Mela and Sangam
According to legends, Vishnu was carrying a Kumbh of Amrit, when a scuffle broke out and four drops spilled. They fell to earth at four Tirthas of Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. A tirtha is a place where the devout can attain salvation. The event is commemorated every three years by the Kumbh Mela, held at each tirtha in turn; the Sangam is known as Tirtharaj, the ‘King of Tirthas’ and here the Maha Kumbh is held once every 12 years, which is the greatest and holiest of all. Ardh Kumbh is held once every six years. Sangam is the point where the water of the river Ganga meets the water of river Yamuna, along with the mythical Saraswati, which remains unseen but is believed to run underground. It is located about 6 km from Prayagraj Railway Station. An Ardh Kumbh Mela was held in early 2019 in prayagraj. The next full Kumbh Mela is scheduled for 2025 in Prayagraj.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is the largest religious congregation of pilgrims on earth, during which participants take a ritual dip in a sacred river. Devotees believe that by bathing in the Ganges one is freed from sins liberating her/him from the cycle of birth and death. The congregation includes ascetics, saints, sadhus, aspirants-kalpavasis and visitors. The Kumbh Mela is held at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain every three years by rotation. Millions of people reach the place during the Kumbh Mela.
